Ezekiel 28:12-15 describes him as “the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty… anointed as a guardian cherub.” Lucifer dwelled in the very presence of God, appointed to serve and protect the holiness of Heaven.
Satan’s original purpose reflected honor, worship, and leadership among the heavenly hosts. Isaiah 14:12 refers to him as the “morning star,” suggesting a position of brilliance and influence. He was not created as evil but as good, endowed with freedom, beauty, and responsibility.
Yet pride corrupted his purpose. Lucifer sought not to serve God but to be like God. Isaiah 14:13-14 reveals his downfall: “I will ascend to Heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God…” This rebellion led to his expulsion from Heaven and transformation into Satan, the adversary.
Even the highest can fall when pride overtakes their purpose. However, God’s authority prevails, and His purposes stand firm. Understanding Satan’s origin teaches us to stay humble, obedient, and grounded in God’s will.

All right, Satan’s original purpose, what was he? Who is he? Well, we know Satan is the devil. The term Satan means adversary or enemy, one who is against you, but not just like, one who is against, like a minor disagreement, or uh, like a– an a friend, an acquaintance, you know.
You’d have like a–the mortal enemy and an enemy or someone you just are disgruntled or disagree, no, this is like, the ultimate adversary as far polar opposite as you could get.
So, Satan was an angel; we know he is a fallen angel. We get that from the Bible, but Satan was originally created as a very beautiful being. You say, “Why do we spend so much time talking about Satan’s original purpose or who he is?”
Because, exactly like Satan, each and every one of us is created with a purpose. You are created with a purpose; now you have a choice. You can choose to step into that purpose and walk in the calling that God has for your life and obey and abide in God.
We’ve talked about this many times before. We have an entire playlist on “You have a purpose and a calling and an anointing, walk in them.” You can check that out on our website.
And so, like Satan, you have a choice. Now, most of us do not choose to go to that extreme. Satan actively rebelled and thought he was better than God.
Many people here on Earth don’t do that; they don’t actively rebel or think they’re better than God.
But what they do is silently rebel, meaning God has a purpose and a calling for their life. The Lord ordains their steps, but many people choose not to walk in that. Or they get bogged down by the cares of this world, and they never find their true calling.
But God has one for you, and so it’s very important to walk in that. But Satan was a very beautiful being; he was covered with many precious stones and jewels.
The Bible says that, “Every precious stone adorned him.” Think about that. Think about his body was worth more, that had more value on it than probably all the wealth in the world.
The world, remember, because Heaven is–is, I mean, the streets are paved with gold, the walls have 12 layers of different precious gems, layers like I don’t know how thick or tall each one is or how deep, but like that’s a lot.
Can you imagine if you had a cinder block wall, which is 8 inches at–by 16, and however long, so it’s eight by eight. Eight tall row, of course, and eight deep. If that was just pure diamonds, and you had a 40ft wall by 20ft, so big rectangle, 40ft x 20ft.
That’s just a room. Imagine a city, miles and miles, it’s a cube, this–the Kingdom of Heaven. Imagine that–that one row of diamonds, I mean, like so, Satan was covered every precious jewel, every precious jewel adorned him.
Let’s go to Ezekiel 28:13. We have a lot of verses. The Bible tells us a lot about who Satan was and who he is now.
The Old Testament talks a lot about who he was, and the prophecies of how he became Satan. The New Testament, specifically, Jesus, talks a lot about who Satan is now, and also Revelation, so Jesus again.
All right, Ezekiel 28:13. “You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: carnelian, chrysolite and emerald, topaz, onyx and jasper, lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created, they were prepared.”
Think about that, that is amazing, he had all kinds of gold on him, settings and mountings were gold, and then jewels set in there. Satan was a loyal servant of God.
Now, there is one thing that I want to clarify here, because a lot of people read Old Testament prophecies, or they read that verse specifically, and they think that Satan was like a musical angel because the original translation of this.
A lot- mine has been corrected. You see, you see yours depending on your version, or when your Bible was written, or the–the year it was printed, uh, might have a different word here, your settings and mountains, and see really in the footnotes a lot of Bibles say the meaning is uncertain.
But if you look up the original Hebrew for these words, a lot of people think settings and mountains, some versions say tambrates and pipes, and so they think “Oh, Satan must have had like pipe organ pipes within his body, and he was just a musical angel.”
But no, what these original words were tophe which meant tabs, those was–that was a setting, it literally means if you look up the the word setting and nab which means pipes or sockets and so in the–the Strongs concordance those words in Hebrew it means settings and sockets and so you can see this version depending on on what yours is.
I’m curious, put a comment below and tell us. This says settings and mountings, the original closest accurate translation would be settings and sockets, and so what does that mean?
Well, it means your settings, like where you would set a jewel, like if you have a ring, the setting is how the -the diamond sits in there.
And the socket would be like–like a socket, like your–your shoulder socket, it’s like this and then something goes in there, and it holds it so it’s a setting in a socket or mountings not necessarily pipes like a pipe organ, and so that’s something that uh is an interesting misinterpretation that a lot of people have today.
So when they say, “Oh, all music is of the devil because the devil was filled with music and now it’s all fallen away.” No, you know, let’s get back to the root of the words and what they mean, and then make our interpretations so.
And–and also when you read the rest of the–the verses, it’s talking about jewels being mounted in his body, so which makes more sense contextually that all of these jewels had pipe organs in them or flowing through the body or that the settings and and sockets or tambals and pipes were actually mountings for the jewels.
And he just had mountings of gold; it wasn’t just some other metal that held the jewel, it was a mounting or a socket of gold, and he had gold all around his body. To me, that makes more sense contextually.
Now does it matter? No, because whether you think he had pipe organs through him and the pipes were gold and not brass, or you think he had multiple sockets of jewels all over him, as long as you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, your opinion there does not matter.
Now, is it interesting? Yes. Is it something to discuss? Yes. Can we learn from it, from that part? No. There’s really no application there; what we can learn from is how Satan became Satan.
So let’s keep going, all right. Satan was ordained to be the caretaker of the garden. The first part of the next verse, let’s go.
Ezekiel 28:14 “You were ordained as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you.” Remember, you have a purpose, you have a calling. God created you for a reason; it’s your choice what you do with that and how you discover that reason.
If you choose to discover that. Satan was a pretty big deal. He was like God’s right-hand man, sort of like the first mate on a ship; he was ordained to take care of the earth, the Garden of Eden, the Garden of God.
However, what happened? Wickedness and jealousy filled his heart, which led to what? Rebellion and a mutiny. Satan wanted to be like God so much, he wanted to take his place and be above God.
This is interesting, all right, let’s go to Isaiah 14:12-14, Isaiah 14:12-4
“How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God.’
‘I will sit enthroned on the mount of the assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds, I will make myself like the Most High.’”
All right, this is a very important verse. Lots of prophecy, Isaiah is–is one of the most prophetic books. Okay, what are we –what are we talking about here? You said, “In your heart I will ascend to the heavens.” Wasn’t he already in the heavens?
No, what was Satan ordained over? To take care of God’s garden. And so Satan became disgruntled, like he is the most beautiful angel, he is the right-hand man of God, but yet he is taking care of the garden.
But Satan didn’t recognize the honor and responsibility of that task, because eventually, what happened? Humankind was placed in the garden, and so Satan was to take care of what could be God’s greatest creation, humans.
Because He created them in his own image, and so Satan became jealous of like–wait a minute, us angels were created, and you created these humans, these bags of meat, to be above us, and I am now looking after their garden, but it’s, but it was God’s garden, but Satan saw it differently.
He said, “What is going on? You demoted me, you created some other being to be above us, to have a better relationship with you, when they die, they get to be with you, but we are eternal servants as angels, serving now your other creation that isn’t even as beautiful.
And so Satan had all that jealousy was filling his heart, and what happened? He was the morning star. In the New Testament, it talks about that, the morning star. In addition, a lot of pagan or false religions they worship the morning star, sometimes we call it the sun or the sun god.
Which is I–I– incidentally, where we get Sunday, but of course, all of the days are from Greek or Norse gods or something like that, so we don’t–uh–incorporate that, but–but that’s where a lot of that comes from.
A lot of pagan religions try to get on that, the sun, the morning star, oh son of the dawn, he was what? Cast down to Earth. He said he would raise the throne above and sit up there with God. He will make himself like the Most High.
So what happened? Satan had that, and he said, “I’m going to rebel.” He rebelled and tried to overthrow heaven. He wanted to have his throne above God’s and said, “I can do a better job than you, I know better for my life than God.”
That’s what Satan was saying: he believed that he had a better purpose than what God called him to do, and so he rebelled. Michael and his angels fought. And what happened? They defeated Satan.
Proverbs 16:5, let’s go there, but first, what happened? Why did that happen? Anytime you think you have a better plan than God, what is that? You boil all that down, you get to the root of the matter, it’s called pride.
You need to have nothing to do with pride; you need to never condone it, never, don’t even accept pride, don’t even say you’re proud of your son or daughter or your children or your accomplishments. No, do not make room for any pride.
What does James say, “Do not give the devil a foothold,” do not even say I am so proud of you. No, you could be delighted in them, you could say “Your actions brought me great joy,” you could say “Your accomplishments are really whatever, I–I–I am so overjoyed with your accomplishments, you I’m delighted in what you do, you bring me great delight.”
Those are the terms God uses for us. We need to be delighted, like wisdom, delighted in God day after day. It didn’t say it was proud of what God did; satan became proud, he believed he knew better than God.
Let’s go to Proverbs 16:5: “The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.”
We saw Satan’s punishment. What happened? he became proud. He was going to ascend, Michael, and his angels fought him, pushed him down, and then what? They threw him down to Earth, with who? All of his angels, all of the people that joined with Satan and said, “Ye,s I will be part of this, let’s overthrow.”
What happened? Well, it was a third of the angels and Satan, so really, there was a big heavenly battle. Satan and one-third against really God or Michael, and ⅔, so they’re outnumbered already.
Of course, they’re going to lose, and then they lost, and now we can enforce that victory. So remember anytime you’re questioning, uh, demonic activity or–or when demons are attacking you, they’re already outnumbered two to one angelically.
And the believer is stronger, so really, they don’t stand a chance against you. But let’s continue. Satan was thrown down to earth with all his angels, Revelation 12:7-9.
Let’s go there, Revelation 12:7-9
“Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled down to earth, and his angels with him.”
Let’s go to Luke, Luke 10:18. Luke 10:18, he replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”
What happened? The battle happened. Satan was hurled down to the earth, all right, so Satan was the guardian cherub of the Garden of Eden. He became proud, jealous, he wanted more, he rose up, attacked, then he was hurled down to Earth.
He got demoted as even the guardian Cherub stripped of his authority, and then, what did he want to do? He said, “I still want that authority,” so he took it from humans, and now he reigns the Earth.
He took dominion of this world, and then later on in the Old Testament he said, “We will ascend to Heaven,” so he influenced Nimrod to become a great and evil king who lived very–very long time, uh, and what did they do? They built this tower of Babel to try to ascend to the heavens.
This tower was so huge that if you started at one point and tried to walk around it, it would take you more than a year to walk around it, if you walked every day.
It was so tall, same thing, that every single day they had people carrying bricks up, and if you left today, you would not get to where they were building until years later. That’s how tall this tower was, just unimaginable.
It was so tall–so tall, and the people were so warped and twisted that if somebody accidentally dropped a brick, they cried more over the brick than if somebody fell down dead, because if someone fell down dead, so what, we’ll just have more workers keep coming up.
They put them in the walls; they put their babies in the walls. They were doing all kinds of terrible things, but this tower was so big, imagine a tower so big around that it would take you more than a year to walk around it, more than a year to get up there.
They were trying to get to the heavens to overthrow God, to try to fight again. All right, continue on. So, why did Satan give up such this great position and risk being expelled from heaven? It was pride, like we said, “Pride really became his destruction.” Let’s go to Ezekiel 28:17.
Ezekiel 28:17 “All right, your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings.”
His heart became proud; he thought he was better than God. You need to take great care to avoid pride at all costs. Remember, you can’t even believe that you are proud in your heart of others; of yourself; of your accomplishments, nothing. Avoid pride, or it will destroy you.
Let’s go to Proverbs 11:2: “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” Pride came to Satan, and what happened? Disgrace. You see, there’s a saying, “Pride is what made the devil.”
The devil, that is true because his heart was filled with pride; He thought he was better than God, he thought he knew better than God, he thought his plans were better than God’s plans for him.
He did not submit to God’s authority, and what happened? He got overthrown. So anytime pride comes in your life, that is from the devil because the devil is pride. Proverbs 29:23.
Proverbs 29:23 “Pride brings a person low, but the lowly in spirit gain honor.” Pride will always come before destruction; it will destroy you.
Let’s go to Proverbs 16:18: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” You see a lot of people make the mistake, and they think that pride goes before a fall, but a fall is just a minor correction.
Pride really goes before destruction; if you are proud, you will be destroyed. What was Satan’s original purpose? It was to be glorious and magnificent.
God had a–an incredible ordination and a plan for him. He chose to be proud instead, and look where he ended up; he is our footstool, we tread upon his head.
He has brought low, so do what you can to avoid pride; let Satan’s original purpose be a lesson to you. He was created way up here, and now he is the lowest of the low.
Let’s pray, “Father, thank you so much for this interesting message and the excellent application and lesson that we can learn from it. Thank you so much for giving us this example of a majestic being created as one of the greats in Heaven, but because of pride, was expelled, was thrown down, was demoted, was put beneath our feet.
He is a footstool to us, a stepping stone; we crush his head. He has been defeated, and we are to enforce the victory, and so thank you, Father. Help each and every person watching and listening to grasp this, to understand it that they need to expunge pride from their lives.
They can have no part in it; they don’t even want to say the words, they don’t even want to feel that emotion or that feeling that they would recognize that pride is of the devil and that they would want nothing to do with it.
And if they are looking for other words of affirmation, Father give them to them; they are delighted, they are joyed, they are filled with joy, they are–they’ve been brought delight, and they say, “It sounds weird,” get used to talking like a different creation.
And we are not of this world. Thank you for helping us remember that, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Remember that pride will bring you low, pride will destroy you. Avoid it, learn from Satan’s original purpose, have a great week, and God bless.
