Wisdom and knowledge can be a burden. Solomon knew this, yet he still was very adamant that you need to get wisdom and knowledge even though it may cost you all you have.
Why? Because the benefits of wisdom and knowledge are immeasurable. They can help you make better decisions, avoid costly mistakes, and achieve success in all areas of your life.
Think about it: would you rather be ignorant or knowledgeable? Would you prefer to stumble through life blindly or have a clear understanding of how things work?
The answer is obvious. You want to be wise and knowledgeable because that’s what leads to true happiness, fulfillment, and success.
So don’t shy away from seeking wisdom and knowledge just because it may seem daunting at first. Embrace the challenge with open arms knowing that the rewards will far outweigh any costs.
Invest in yourself today by committing to learning something new every day. Read books on topics that interest you, attend seminars or workshops related to your field of expertise, and seek out mentors who can guide you along your journey toward greater understanding.
Remember: there’s no limit to what you can achieve when armed with wisdom and knowledge!
That also means you need to be ready for it. You must be in the right state of mind. After all, if you’re not, it could literally blow your mind. You could end up being taken away by the men in white jackets and locked up for good.
How can you be ready for God’s wisdom? Simple. Learn all you can about God through His Word, the Bible. Study the scriptures and talk to God. He will make sure you’re ready.

Today we are talking about something that is really going to change your life, and it is not going to change your life, you are not going to get it unless you are ready for it. How are you going to be ready?
Let’s dive in. God’s wisdom. You got to be ready for it. You want wisdom, be ready. “For with much wisdom, comes much sorrow. The more knowledge, the more grief.” Ecclesiastes 1:18.
That is Solomon, the wisest man in the world ever. He had more wisdom than anyone ever had or ever will have. If you could have a fraction of that wisdom, you would probably be the smartest and wisest person in the world today.
That is how wise Solomon was and he wrote this. For with much wisdom, comes much sorrow. The more knowledge, the more grief. The more you realize you do not know or have yet to learn.
Now why with much wisdom comes much sorrow? Because now everything, what is going to happen, you can see the outcomes. You can see what is going to happen and that people are struggling or failing or what the results are going to be.
Because you can see that, you have got a lot of sorrow and a lot of grief with that. The more knowledge you have, the more of what is out there that could harm you, that could hurt people.
Of what other people are doing to each other. Like people who have seen war, they are different. The world does not look as good as it did before, because now they know what people are capable of and how evil people can be.
Or those who hunt down serial killers and they see all the awful things that people can do to other people. The world just loses its sparkle; the more knowledge, the more grief.
Ignorance truly is bliss. You live in that. You do not know. You do not know all the evils of the world. You do not have the knowledge of good and evil. Think of Adam and Eve in the garden, ignorance was bliss, knowledge became a loss of bliss. Remember, Solomon was the most wise person. He had more wisdom than anyone, and how did he get it? Well, let’s find out.
1 Kings 3:12. Turn with me if you have your Bible. 1 Kings 3:12, “I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never be anyone like you, nor will there ever be.” Who is talking? That is God.
God says to Solomon,“What do you want? I will give it to you, anything.” Solomon says, “I want a wise and discerning heart,” and God says, “Wow, I will give it to you and I will give you even more.
Since you did not ask for riches or for a big kingdom or to conquer your enemies or something of selfish ambition or gain, I will give that of it to you. As well I will give you wisdom and everything else,” and he did.
Solomon became the richest man in the world. I mean even people like Amazon or Tesla, those guys or Bill Gates, I think if you combined all of them I do not think they could touch what Solomon had. Solomon was so blessed because of wisdom and he dedicated several chapters of The Book of Proverbs to teaching you what you must do to get wisdom.
If you have not read Proverbs, I challenge you [to] read one chapter every single day for two years. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs, 31 days in the month. There are months that are less, like on day 30 you read two chapters, or day 28 make up a little bit more. Do it. Read Proverbs every day for two years. It will change your life.
Let’s go to Proverbs. The first nine chapters are really all about getting wisdom and avoiding adultery which is a part of wisdom. To avoid that is having wisdom, showing restraint, and knowledge. But Proverbs 4:7 specifically says, “Wisdom is supreme. Therefore get wisdom, though it cost you all you have, get understanding.”
Solomon is saying wisdom and knowledge and understanding are the most valuable thing you can ever have. If you have to pay everything that you own today to get that, do it. It is worth it. Why?
Because with that, you could get everything back times a million. If you have the wisdom and the understanding and the knowledge, you can make all that money and possessions and wealth back. You will get it back.
Solomon is saying if it costs you everything you have, get wisdom. That is how important it is to have wisdom. He had the most, think of the sorrow and the grief he had to bear. In fact, the entire book of Ecclesiastes is Solomon going through life documenting things saying, “I have everything, I am going to start trying everything, every drug, every pleasure, every this, every that, I am doing it all.”
He says all of this stuff does not make people happy, no matter what. He had many wives, many concubines, palaces, gold, silver, rubies, jewels, everything. He had it all, land [and] kingdoms.
He said it really boils down to a couple things. You want to know what they are? Read Ecclesiastes. It is very important. Solomon had to bear a lot of sorrow and grief because of all of his knowledge.
Back to Adam and Eve. Think of the sorrow and the grief that they had to bear when they obtained the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis Chapter 3 is all about when they fell. Genesis 3 Verse 7, “And then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.” What is the significance of that?
Adam and Eve were living in paradise. They were talking with God. God might have even physically been walking in the garden with them. Think of how cool that was. Anything they wanted, here it was. “I am hungry for this,” “I want these lions and lambs laying down together,” all kinds of stuff playing, frolicking, whatever flowers growing perfectly manicured, everything in its nice rows.
All the orchards of different trees, groves of fruit trees and vines and vineyards, and everything all perfectly manicured, no weeds, grass that stayed the perfect height, bushes that stayed trimmed very nicely.
This was paradise. They never had to do any maintenance, nothing, and then they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and what happened? They became like God, knowing good and evil.
All of a sudden they felt shame, they felt disgrace, they felt disappointment, they felt grief. They got more knowledge, but they got more grief. They got a lot of sorrow, but they knew good and evil now and so they felt shame and they realized what was going on. Then of course because of that, the Earth was put under a curse.
They got the knowledge of good and evil and they changed forever. Just like how we said people who go to war come back different, the serial killer hunters, they have a different perspective because they know the evil that can be done in this world.
Knowing this you must make sure you are ready if you want wisdom, if you want knowledge. You must be ready to receive the wisdom that you are asking for, because once you get it life may not be all daffodils and roses. You are not gonna be living in an ignorant bliss. The more knowledge, the more grief. With much wisdom comes much sorrow.
You are gonna change. You are gonna be different. Now am I saying avoid wisdom? Do not do it because living an ignorant blissful life is better? Definitely get wisdom, just make sure you are ready. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault and it will be given to you.” Ask God if you lack wisdom. Ask God, that is it, ask Him.
But He is not simply going to say, “Here you go,” because you are not ready for that knowledge just like your children. You have children and they say, “Hey I want to know whatever, how this works” or the very popular one is they want to know how babies are made.
Well if they are three years old you are probably not going to tell them. If they are 5 years old, no. 10 years old, probably not. 12, maybe a good age, I do not know, it is up to you as a parent. The point is there are certain things that people are not ready to understand. They are not ready to know and this is with all kinds of stuff.
Taekwondo, karate, you are not going to teach just anyone how to kill someone with their bare hands. You must make sure they are ready to know how to do that because if they are not ready, they could misuse that. God is not going to give you something you are not ready for. How do you prepare? How do you get ready for wisdom?
Build your faith. You need to make sure you are on a strong foundation. You must be really solid. You got to be a rock. A rock that Jesus could say, “I will build my church on you.” Have that faith. Trust in God. Have that relationship with Jesus. If you do not know how to do that, we would love to help you. Comment below.
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one gets to the Father except through Him. Believe in Him in your heart. Ask Him to forgive your sins, live a good life following Jesus. Live in love and ask for wisdom and when you are ready God will give you immeasurably more. Sometimes though, you might be asking for it now and you are not getting it. You are not getting any wisdom. Well, it is because you are not ready for it.
James Chapter 4 Verse 3 says, “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” Why are you asking for wisdom? Are you asking for wisdom so that you will be smarter than everyone else? Are you asking for wisdom and knowledge so that you will be able to tell them what they are doing wrong? What is your motivation for asking for wisdom?
God is not going to give you anything if you have the wrong motives. If you ask God for money so that you can go to the casino, you ask God for money so that you can buy a new car, what is the motive? You ask God for money so that you can support a missionary, guess what? You might get it. God wants you to have the correct intentions in doing everything.
Now of course you cannot just have good intentions and then do things differently. You must have the right intention and then follow it through with a correct deed and a correct action, living in faith, trusting God that He will do things that you cannot do, and making yourself ready to receive more.
We have talked about it many times. You are not going to give your child a $50 toy if they do not take care of the $10 toy. Why? Because they are not ready. They are not ready to handle that $50 toy. If you are a hunter, you buy your little kid a 20-gauge or have them use a 20-gauge because they are not ready to handle a big 12-gauge. It would knock them over, they are not ready for it.
God is not going to give you something you are not ready for. So you have to get ready to bear that burden of knowledge and wisdom. If God bestows upon you some of that knowledge and you are not ready for it, guess what will happen? Your mind will be blown. Really. You will be filled with so much trouble and grief.
Think of John in Revelation. When he got all those visions, think of what he was going through. He is like, I just cannot even fathom what is going on. I gotta write it down and he wrote it all down, and he said I still do not know exactly.
Think of Daniel. We are gonna read a couple verses here. We went through a whole sermon series on Daniel and his visions, you can check that out in a playlist or navigate to our YouTube channel.
Daniel 7:15 says, “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me.” 7:28, “This is the end of the matter. I, Daniel, was deeply troubled by my thoughts, and my face turned pale, but I kept the matter to myself.”
Why did he keep it to himself? Well probably because if he shared it with others, they would have locked him up in the loony bin or at that day and age thrown him to the lion’s den. Wait a minute, they did that anyway. The point is there was so much given to him, that he had so much knowledge, that he was distraught with grief just like Solomon.
The Book of Ecclesiastes, when you are given that knowledge and that wisdom you have to be ready for it. God is not going to overwhelm you and you are just going to lose your mind. I mean maybe some people who are locked up in loony bins, maybe they have too much knowledge, too much wisdom and they just do not know how to handle it. It is very possible.
Therefore make sure you are ready to receive the wisdom and the knowledge that you are asking for. How are you ready? Have that firm relationship with God. Remember Jesus said if you build your house on a rock it will stay through the wind and the streams and the storms and the waves. If you build it on sand, it will crumble.
You got to be that rock so that when you get that wisdom you will be solid. If you are on sand, you get that wisdom, lock them up, men in white coats, they are coming for you. Grow your faith, build on a strong foundation.
God is not going to give you something you cannot handle, but if you keep asking for it and He gives you some and you cannot handle it, bad things will happen. But God loves you so much. He does not want to put you through that pain.
Be ready to handle that wisdom, that knowledge. If there is something you want, remember James says ask God who gives generously to all, but there is a catch, without finding fault. That means that in order to get wisdom, you have to be faultless. Well, we already know that none of us are faultless. We are all sinners.
So how do we even get wisdom? You have to believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior so that He wipes your sins clean and then you need to be forgiven. Ask for forgiveness of your sins.
Now all of a sudden you have Jesus’ blood covering you. You are covered by the blood of Jesus. You can ask for wisdom because now when God looks at you, He does not see you [as] a sinner, He sees the blood of Jesus covering you making you pure.
Then it is up to you. You got to show God that when He starts giving you wisdom that you can use it. We have talked about this before. Use your gifts. If you are not using it, you are gonna lose it. You gotta use them. When God starts giving you wisdom and knowledge, use it, and then He will give you more.
He will give you more, but He is not going to give it all at once. It is like if you say, “God, I want patience,” He does not just give you patience, He gives you the opportunity to be patient. Yeah what you are asking for, you ask for patience, you are asking for a lot of stressful opportunities of children bothering you. Spouses, whatever is going on, you are going to be put in situations that require patience and you will build that characteristic you ask for.
Wisdom, guess what? You are not just going to get it, you are going to be put in situations that require you to use what you are asking for. Start using your gifts. If you have gifts right now and you are not using them, why would God give you more? He would not.
What you have will be taken away and given to someone else. It is Biblical, like I said, we have talked about it before, so be ready for the wisdom and the knowledge. How do you be ready? You have got to have that great relationship with Jesus Christ. Make sure your faith is strong. You are on a good foundation and then all you need to do is ask.
Let’s pray. Lord Jesus, I ask that anyone out there who wants wisdom, and I really ask that they all want wisdom, God if I could hand it out I would. I would like to see every single hand, people typing in on chats, everybody would want wisdom. Lord, I ask that they would all have that burning desire for wisdom and knowledge. That though it cost them all they have, they would get wisdom and get knowledge.
Lord, that they would be ready for it. That they would do what it takes to get ready. That they would pray. That they would read their Bible. That they would use their gifts. That they would have a relationship with Jesus Christ and that they would ask for the forgiveness of their sins and then ask for and start using the wisdom and knowledge that You so generously provide. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Remember all you have to do is ask. God bless.
