The weekly Sabbath was not merely a command—it was a gift, a divine invitation to rest, reflect, and reconnect with our Creator. In Exodus 20:8-11, God commands His people: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.”
This day was set apart for rest from labor, spiritual renewal, and honoring God’s provision. Jesus affirmed the Sabbath’s purpose in Mark 2:27, saying, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” It is a blessing, not a burden.
Keeping the weekly Sabbath is more than abstaining from work; it’s about realigning our hearts with God, restoring our souls, and remembering who we are in Him. In a world of constant busyness and noise, the weekly Sabbath reminds us that our worth is not in what we do, but in who we belong to.
This sermon calls us back to God’s rhythm—one day each week to stop, worship, and delight in the One who created and sustains us.

Why do we want to reach more people? Well, why do you want to reach more people? The answer is the same for all of us.
We want to reach more people, because then more people will know the Word of God. And look at the world today. More people need the Word of God.
In addition, social media is filled with all kinds of terrible, negative, harmful, content. If you share our content, which hopefully you agree is positive, is filled with light, is filled with the Spirit, has the power to change lives.
Not because I am here, but because the Spirit is working through me. Because the Bible is coming through these messages. If you share this, you are sharing positive content on social media.
You are engaging in an act of war against the devil. You are using this post, sharing it, making this video as a post on your social media. You are taking ground for the kingdom. You are going into the world and preaching the gospel.
How? Because if you have a Facebook page, a profile, whatever, with a hundred friends and you share a video on there, share this video, share a verse, share one of our ministry minutes, guess what happens?
Those hundred people may or may not see it, but they will know that you posted that. So, you just went into that world of Facebook and shared the gospel. That’s following the great commission.
Now, if people see that, that has the power right there. The the Word of God is living and active. And so, don’t say, “Well, no one ever sees my posts, or I didn’t get 50,000 likes, or I didn’t get reposts or whatever.”
Share it as an act of faith and trust that God will have the right, one person see that, that needs to see it. And so that’s one of the many reasons why we are creating all of this content, because we are relying on people like you to share it, so that it goes all around the world, into the world of social media: Facebook, Twitter, or X, LinkedIn, TikTok.
Get it out there. Help us do that and reach more people with the Word of God so we can help them understand and interpret the scriptures in the Bible. If this is your first time with us, thanks for joining.
If you came here because someone shared a post and you saw it, comment below. Encourage other people. Let’s work together to reach the world with the Gospel of Christ.
Today, we are talking about the weekly Sabbath. Yes, I know this is a heavy topic. It’s a controversial topic. Is it on this day or this day? Do we need to do that? Didn’t –didn’t Jesus get rid of the Sabbath when he said, “Here are all the commandments that are important.”
He didn’t really bring up the Sabbath. He also said the Sabbath was created for us. He’s Lord over it. So, if Jesus is in us, aren’t we Lord over it as well? All kinds of–of trouble in Christianity.
And what is the reason? Is because Satan is trying to create discord. So people are so focused on traditions of man or religion, and they miss the whole point, which is to do what Jesus commanded us to do.
Get out into all the world, preach the gospel, heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons, make disciples of all nations. In other words, sharing Jesus, making disciples, taking ground, and building the kingdom, we need your help with that.
Let’s get to work. All right. So, weekly Sabbath. Now, there is something that we will differentiate from. In addition to weekly Sabbaths, there are also some things called high Sabbaths.
These are festivals or, and also there are Sabbath years, and today we are not talking about those. What are uh what are those? What is a high Sabbath? A high Sabbath is a ceremonial Sabbath.
There were seven of them throughout the year. They’re also known as festivals or holidays. Sometimes they are Jewish holidays. Passover is an example. Feast of Weeks, Day of Atonement, things like that.
Uh, they’re also the Sabbath years. Remember, every seven years or on every seventh year, you have to let the land rest for an entire year. Then the amount you harvest on the sixth would –would get you through that and through not only the sixth year, but also the seventh, and then until the harvest in the eighth.
And every seven years, that was supposed to be a land, a year of rest. Then, of course, every seven sets of seven was a year of jubilee. So, on the 50th year was a year of jubilee, which is a celebration unto the Lord.
All right? So, but we’re talking about a weekly Sabbath day. So, let’s go to some scripture.
Exodus 34:21. “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest, you must rest.”
Now, if you know anything about farming, as soon as the crop is ready, you’re out there taking it in 24/7, seven days a week, or the crop might go bad, or something would eat it. The raccoons seem to know exactly when that corn is ripe, and bam, it’s gone.
But God says, “Even during harvest, on the seventh day, you rest.” Let’s go to Exodus 20:8-11. We’ll read a little bit more, 20:8-11.
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God.
On it you shall not do any work, neither you, your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.
For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but He rested on the seventh day. Therefore, the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it Holy.”
So, the seventh day is a Holy day. The seventh-day concept continues throughout the Bible. The Israelites didn’t receive any manna on the seventh day. Let’s go to Exodus 16:26.
“Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.”
Our seventh day of our traditional modern-day week is what day? Saturday. So, how did it come to be that many Christians honor the Sabbath on Sunday, which is really our first day of the week?
Now, that’s if Christians even honor the Sabbath at all, or if people even honor the Sabbath at all. When did this begin? Well, it began after the death of Jesus. You see, Christians were honoring the Sabbath by praying and resting on Saturday, or called something called Shabbat.
This was in the Jewish religion. It started Friday night at sundown, and it went till Saturday night. We have a sermon, “Day Begins at Night,” that you should check out to learn more about that.
But their days started from sundown or sunset to the next sundown or sunset. Usually, that was about 3 to 5 p.m. – 5 p.m. roughly, cause it was at dusk, and then it went until 24 hours later. So about 5 p.m. the next day.
That’s how their days were counted. That’s how they went through the Sabbath day. Uh, what did they do? They prayed for the upcoming week. They dedicated that day, the Shabbat or the Sabbath, as a day of devotion to the Lord.
Then on Sundays, they gathered together because on the Sabbath day, uh, according to customs, some they couldn’t even walk because it was too laborious. They–there, there was too many rules, too many things.
And so after the death of Jesus, they continued to honor the Sabbath on Saturday or Friday night to Saturday night. And then after that, they would gather together, come together, and then continue on whatever gathering, preparing, meeting, and then presumably Monday or Sunday night or whenever they would start their work week.
Now, uh, let’s go to Leviticus 23:3. “There are six days when you may work, but the seventh is a day of Sabbath rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the LORD.”
So here, God is saying, “You can combine the Sabbath and a day of sacred assembly.” So somehow that got forgotten in with the Jewish traditions and the Jewish uh, Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes.
Well, the Essenes were kind of a sect of their own. They always were gathering together, always practicing Sabbath. So they might have been the rightest, rightest, the most right, most correct out of the other– out of the three of those groups.
But we know the Pharisees and the Sadducees were way wrong because that’s who Jesus critiqued more than any others. And so what did they do? Well, they said that “On the Sabbath we can’t do anything.”
And so then, they had the Sabbath, and then Sunday, the day after the Sabbath, they would most likely gather. But in Leviticus, it says, “That is the day of sacred assembly.” So it is a day of Sabbath rest of–of resting from your work and dedicating that day to the Lord.
It is a day, of us, for us to recuperate and rejuvenate. And how do we do that? By gathering sacred assembly with others. That is one of the ways that we can be stirred and spurred on in.
The Holy Spirit is to be around other believers, firing each other up. Iron sharpens iron. As time moved on, though, Christians have come to only meet on Sunday. And we observe that day as the Sabbath.
Also, uh, that started again after the death of Jesus, when the Roman Emperor Constantine, he made Sunday, he declared for the whole Roman Empire, Sunday is to be a day of rest and worship.
Worshipping what the sun, that’s what he said, “This will be the day we worship the sun.” They were sun worshippers now, if you remember last week we talked about “Satan’s Original Purpose,” you can check that out. He was known as the morning star.
What is the morning star that would be the sun, and so people who were worshiping the sun were worshiping the devil. That was one of Satan’s ways to in… kind of infiltrate religion or infiltrate to try to steal people from religion but–but also masquerading as an angel of light.
So he took his devil worship practices and makes them so close to religion that people cannot tell the difference. And then pretty soon they adopt the pagan or anti-religion, or satanic. We’re just going to call it what it is.
Satanic practices as part of their religion. And so, unknowingly, they are doing these things that are actually honoring the devil. And that’s what Satan wants. It’s like if you say, “I have a Bible, and I have a Quran. I am a Christian. I believe the Bible.”
Don’t read the Quran. Because guess what? It is so close to the Bible that you could get very confused. What did Satan do? Satan took a text like the Bible, and he said, “I’m going to rewrite this and he rewrote it and made this Quran to lead people astray.”
Now, you say, “Are you telling me that they are worshiping the devil?” Well, they say that Allah is the name of their god. What is that from? If you look in the, in the origins, the Muhammad he had several gods that they worshiped.
First of all, that is not biblical. That is not monotheism. That is not the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But yet they claim it to be the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But it is not because it was uh plural theistic or multi-theism, polytheism.
And so what was that? The Allah was the moon god. And so they took one god, but it was the moon god as the god they worship. And now today we just think, “Oh, that’s just their name for God.” Well, yes, but it is the moon god. So, it isn’t even Yahweh God.
See, they’re worshiping the wrong God because their doctrine has led them astray, because it is so close to the Abrahamic texts that many people cannot discern the difference. And that’s what Satan tries to do.
He doesn’t create anything. He perverts everything God created, trying to lead people astray slowly. And he did that here as well. The seventh day is a day of rest and worship. But many people don’t even do that.
We need to be different. Let’s take a look at the days for a, for a second. So, Emperor Constantine said Sunday will be the day of rest in the whole Roman Empire. Christians said, “Okay, well, that’s fine. We’ll just continue to do what we do, but we’ll do it on Sunday instead of Saturday. No big deal.”
God said what? That it was made for us. So it doesn’t matter what day. That’s what they were saying. They said, “We’ll do it on Sunday. No problem.” But Emperor Constantine said, “We are going to do it because we want to worship the sun.”
Well, the Christians said, “Well, we’re not worshiping the sun, but we’ll sneak in under the law.” So, it’s kind of a little uh give and take right there. What happened is when the calendars changed or the days of the weeks changed, each day became named after a Roman god. Sunday.
They named the days after the sun, moon, and the five planets, moon Monday. They had their other gods, Mars or Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn- Saturday. What else? In our –in our modern language, we have we’ve adapted them from the Norse gods.
You may be more familiar with these because of all of the Marvel movies. Now, they had each day named after what? The sun and the moon, and then their gods Tier, or where, is where we get Tuesday. That’s the equivalent of god of war, Mars. God of War for the Romans – Tier god of war.
Then they had Odin or Woden which is where we get Wednesday, that is their equivalent for Mercury. Thor which is the god of thunder Thursday, which is the equivalent for Jupiter.
And then frig, which is where you have Friday, which is the equivalent to their Ven to Roman Venus, which is a goddess of love. See, they’re all parallels. But we’ve taken from the Norse names. Then–then they had Saturday.
This is the only one that doesn’t really parallel the Romans of Saturn. But on in the Norse god, it was loud or bath. They called this the bath day or the day of bathing, which could be like a day of rest because it was their one day a week, whether they needed it or not.
It was bath day, Saturday, after all of the other days of honoring their gods. They took a day to bathe and–and refresh, and then at the beginning they started it over again. Started worshiping the sun, the moon, and then each of their gods, and then taking their baths to be clean for the next week.
And so it’s that’s where we get this this Saturday concept, because it was the seventh day of progression. Now, what’s interesting is, in the Old Testament, God never says on certain days. He never gives any names.
He just says, “On the seventh day, on your seventh day. Six days you shall gather, but there will be none on the seventh day.” And so, as we get into modern-day life with–with all of our different work weeks starting on different days, different days off, different industries, do we all need to shut down on the same day?
Do we need to culturally change? Is that possible? Well, maybe in today’s world, because the world is ruled by Satan, it’s not. But as believers, it could be, and we should. But what day should we do it on? Is that something that needs to be addressed?
Do we say, “Well, we’re not going to church on Sunday then, because I want to honor on Saturday, so I need to find a Saturday service.” If that works for you, then you need to do that.
But the point is, most people don’t even have a day unto the Lord. And you need to be different. My recommendation would be, dedicate your whole weekend to God. You can still do things, of course, but don’t work your normal job, your nine-to-five, your paying job, your gig.
You can do laundry, but even – and Paul, he even says, “Do everything as if working unto the Lord.” What does that mean? Well, it could mean that your daily job is honoring God.
And so if– if you’re doing every work, whether it’s household chores, whether you have a garden, a farm, whatever, home improvement projects, your nine-to-five where you get paid, if you are doing all of that with a heart unto the Lord, then arguably you could be saying, “Every day is my Sabbath rest for the Lord.”
However, God created the Sabbath for you to rest, to enter a Sabbath rest. Meaning it is Godly permission for you to take a day off. Not just sitting on the couch watching TV all day, but resting, connecting with people, meeting together.
So if you work weekends, ask God, say, “I, I think God, I might need weekends off.” Pray about it. Perhaps your schedule will change. God can make it happen. Our God is great. Or choose another day of rest.
All of a sudden, I hear a lot of people cringing. They say, “No”, you know what? If your work week starts on Monday or starts on, let’s say you– you– you work at a –a job like some kind of security or prison guard, they need people there 24/7, or the airports, or something that’s a hospital. Maybe you work starting on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
You go. And so your days off might be Tuesday, Wednesday. Well, if you start on Thursday, your seventh day would be what? Wednesday. So take that as your Sabbath. Rest, relax, and make an effort to be with God.
Let’s go to Mark 2:27. Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” Listen to that. The Sabbath was made for you. You were not made for the Sabbath.
So if your job, you are in a whatever an essential worker. You are a firefighter. You are a police officer. You are something where we have to have 24/7 coverage, and you work over that weekend, so to speak, then take your Sabbath on another day.
But the point is, take it, because it was made for you as a day of rest. Use it to be with God. And if you do that, if you honor God on the Sabbath and you take whatever your seventh day is and you truly dedicate it to God, you will be blessed.
And if God says, “Listen, I really love that you are taking Wednesday as your seventh day because of your work week, but my original intention, my design is to be on Friday night to Saturday night.” Then God will make a way for you to do that. Your schedule, you will have an opportunity to change.
But the point is, start being devoted to Him in whatever your situation is now. Don’t wait for your situation to change. Say, “God, I’m dedicating it to you. My seventh day, due to my life, due to the life I’m in, due to the circumstance, is this. This day from now on is yours.”
And you do that. Study, meditate on the Word, dive into sermons, get your family involved, do daily uh, meditations on the Bible, read it together, gather with each other, whatever you can do. Make that seventh day unto the Lord.
Now, if you say, “Well, my kids are in school.” Make the evening then, when they get home. “What if my spouse is on a different schedule?” Then–then you’re going to do two.
You’re going to have the evening of your seventh day being to the Lord and the evening of their seventh day being to the Lord while you’re at work. You might have two. One spouse will have one Sabbath. Another spouse might have another Sabbath.
And on the evenings of those, you guys all come together. Make it happen. Dedicate it to God. And pray and ask God to align your weeks and your seventh days to be together, united with each other, and united with God.
And guess what? He will make it happen. If you are devoted to Him, He makes it happen here on earth for you, because he wants your worship. He wants you to be devoted to Him. So, He’s not going to say, “I’m going to make it impossible for you to do that.”
He’s going to say, “No, start doing it. Show me you’re serious, and I will make it even better. I will make it even easier. I will give you a hunger like you never knew before.” But the point is, you gotta take that first step.
Draw near to God. He draws near to you. It doesn’t say God draws near to you and then you draw near to Him. No, you draw near to God first. Abide in God. He will abide in you. You gotta take that step.
We have that sermon, “Meet God Halfway.” Check that out. Let’s go to one more verse, and then we can wrap up. Hebrews 4:1-11. So more than one verse. Hebrews 4:1-11. I’m going to read through this, then we’ll pray.
“Therefore, since the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.
Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God said, “So I declared an oath on my anger. ‘They shall never enter my rest.’” And yet His works have been finished since the creation of the world.
For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all His works.” And again, the passage above, He says, “They shall never enter my rest.”
Therefore, since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in, because of their disobedience. God again set a certain day, calling it Today, this He did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:
“Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God;
For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from His. Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.”
Basically, what this is saying, this could be a whole sermon, but summing it up, what it’s saying is that there was a–a rest that God had for the people, for the Israelites. They chose not to do it. So then they will never enter my rest.
The generation died and perished. But God says as through David, “Today you can hear my words, enter my rest. So today, start entering the rest of the Lord.” And then yes, there still remains to be a Sabbath-rest.
You can enter that as well if you make the effort to start entering His rest today. Let’s pray.
Father, thank you so much for this message, this important message on the importance of taking a rest during our week on the seventh day, the seventh day. I ask that you would inspire each and every person to do that, to take the seventh-day rest.
That they would dedicate that day unto you fully and completely. and that if it has to be complicated with their spouses and their kids somehow, God, get every person in each family taking a seventh-day rest, entering your rest, finding peace in you, abiding in you.
And God, then I pray that when you see their devotion and dedication, that you would align their weeks together that they could all take that seventh day together, making it truly a day unto you, being obedient to your commands, and that they would enter your Sabbath rest in Jesus’ name.
Amen. Start taking a weekly Sabbath. It will change your life. Have a great week, and God bless.
