August 17 Honors Nonprofit Organizations for Charitable Deeds

Burnsville, MN – Social Media Ministries Founder Spencer Coffman congratulates the nearly 27,000 nonprofit organizations in Minnesota – and the 1.5 million nationwide – for providing food, shelter, education, and spiritual inspiration to those in need in their respective communities.

“Charitable nonprofit organizations are meeting the needs of others in our society with the help of volunteers who selflessly donate time and money,” said Coffman. “These actions and virtues are consistent with the Lord’s teachings and should be recognized to inspire others to do more.”

Nonprofit history can be traced back to Aug. 17, 1894, when the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act was signed, which excluded charitable organizations from federal income tax. Currently, nonprofits still serve others and the U.S. economy, in pre-pandemic numbers, accounting for 11.4 million jobs and 10.3 percent of private sector employment, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2018.

“I’m blessed by our Lord to lead a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit and to inspire others through His timeless teachings,” said Coffman. “It’s wonderful to know the nonprofit sector has grown to its current size and to be part of a national community aimed at helping people in so many ways.”

Religious organizations ranked at the top of all giving in 2018 with nearly 29.6 percent, according to a 2019 report by the Giving USA Foundation. They were followed by education at 13.9 percent, human services at 12.2 percent, gifts to foundations at 11.9 percent, and health at 9.7 percent.
