If you want to hear God’s voice, then you need to be in a place where you can listen and truly hear God. That means mentally, spiritually, and physically. You need to be able to really listen. You can’t have distractions, whether it is environmental or mental. You must be able to focus.
It really helps to be in a place where you feel comfortable. If you’re not comfortable, you’re not going to be able to relax and genuinely hear what God has to say. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a physical place or a mental state, as long as you’re comfortable, you’ll be able to hear God better.
You also need to be open to hearing from God. If you’re not open, then you won’t be able to hear Him. You need to have an open mind and heart so that you can receive whatever God wants to tell you.
Therefore, seek ways to listen and hear God. He speaks to us in many ways, but sometimes it is hard to hear Him because of the noise within us and around us. So take time out for yourself often, be silent before Him, and listen. You can also ask God to help you hear His voice more often.
Other great ways to listen and hear from God are praying, reading the Bible, congregating with other Christians, engaging in studies, meditating on the Bible, et cetera!

So, today we are going to talk about how as a Christian you want to hear God’s voice. Why do you want to hear God’s voice? Well, because how else are you going to know how you are to be living your life? You got to know what God says. How do you do that? This right here is probably the number one way. Read the Bible. This is God’s voice.
This is packed full of great information and knowledge that will show you and teach you what God wants for you and how to live your life. This is your manual, your road map, your GPS, your satellite, whatever analogy you want. This is it. Read the Bible. Don’t just read it once, read it again and again because every time you read it, I guarantee you something new will stand out.
You could read the Book of Matthew a thousand times and you could get a thousand different interpretations and different things that stand out to you, depending on what is going on in your life and what God is revealing to you at that time. So, continue to read the Bible.
The number two way, or the next way, would be prayer. Pray to God. Talk to Him. How else can you hear His voice if you don’t talk to Him? Alright, there we go. Those are two ways.
Another good way, right now, you’re doing it, watching videos, getting interpretations from other people who know and talk to God preferably more than you do. Because how else can you learn? It’s like people say, “Oh, Spencer, you want to be the smartest person in the room, or you always want to be the smartest person in the room.” No, I don’t. If I’m the smartest person in the room, how can I learn? You don’t want to.
You need to be around people who know more than you do but who are also willing to teach you. Because if you’re around somebody who is smarter than you, but they have no desire to share, then that’s stupid. That’s a waste of time. As you have received, freely give. So, we’ve gotten knowledge, we need to share the knowledge, side point.
But, you want to hear God’s voice. Read the Bible, pray, attend church, or watch these videos. Do something to engage with other believers and to learn from them.
So, as you go through your spiritual walk with Jesus, Jesus Christ, with the Lord, with Yahweh, you will encounter many different things, trials, tribulations, errors, problems, all kinds of stuff, hardships, and they will trouble you. You need to cry out to God, and He’ll hear you.
Now, David was very good at this, King David. The whole book of Psalms is practically him crying out to God saying what’s troubling him. As, I mean, come on! This guy was troubled. He was royal, and King Saul ended up despising him, trying to kill him many times, sent him fleeing.
Then his own son, later on, when David did become King, his own son overthrew it, and sent him fleeing. And, then the son ended up dying, and, and then David was distraught that his son died, even though the son just wiped out practically everyone else and tried to over – I mean it, just tremendous. You think you have problems, read about King David – holy moly.
And all of that – what did he do? He cried out to God and said, “Lord, this is troubling me. I need help, but I trust you. I trust you. I trust your guidance,” and then he waited for the Lord. And, guess what? Every single time God delivered him.
There’s one example: David and Bathsheba when David tried to take matters into his own hands instead of waiting for the Lord, and that ended badly. It ended badly. He tried to take matters into his own hands, ended up murdering someone, and as a result, his son died. So, wait for God, rely on God, call out to Him, wait, trust He will tell you what to do if you look and listen.
So, let’s go to Job because Job is another story of someone who cried out to God and waited and waited and waited, and guess what? God delivered him very well from the trials he went through. Job Chapter 33, Verse 14. If you can turn to that book and read with me, awesome. If not, please go back, do it later, rewatch, and do it then.
So, 33, Verse 14, says, “For God does speak, now one way, now another, though man may not perceive it.” So, God speaking to you…maybe one way, maybe another. Maybe He’s speaking to you through this video. Maybe He’s speaking to you through one of these Verses that you’re going to read. Maybe He’s speaking to you through your child, through your pastor, through your parent, through prayer, through something. God is speaking to you.
God is always speaking to us. It’s whether we are able to see it, hear it, and recognize it. You want to hear God’s voice. You want Him to guide you, it is great! He will, He will guide you. He’s probably talking to you many, many times.
There is a movie out there. It’s kind of a – whatever, controversial or silly or dumb movie where the actor is driving down the road praying to God for a sign.
And, a big truck comes out and there’s a whole bunch of road signs on the truck that say, like, U-turn, wrong way, turn around, all of this, and, and he’s still – instead of seeing the sign, he’s mad that this truck just cut him off. Then the truck moves, and on and on, different things happen where he’s praying for a sign – the road’s closed, all this stuff happens, and he doesn’t get it. He doesn’t get it.
The point is God is talking to you! You need to open your eyes, open your ears, and get it. So, you must be in a place – how do you hear it? You must be in a place where you can hear God’s voice. What is, where – what is that place? It’s a quiet place. Where are we supposed to pray to God? We are supposed to go into an inner room with no windows, shut the door, do it in secret, talk to God.
Seen the movie War Room? That’s their war room, the closet. They get all their fightin’ done in there. Great movie if you haven’t seen it. Check it out, and there is a lot of truth to it. You don’t go out and openly pray and all this kind of stuff and show off to people, like, “I’m so holy, here I am, I’m at church, here I am praying, here I am donatin’ money.” No! – you do it in humility, humble.
We had a, a – you give in secret. Same thing, you do all of this in secret, and then your heavenly Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. The rest of those people who do all this in public, they have already received their reward. And, they will receive no reward from their Father in Heaven. What kind of reward do you want? Do you want an earthly reward or a heavenly reward? Heavenly, baby, heavenly.
So, you must be in a place where you can hear God. Can you hear God driving in your car? Yes, in fact, if you’ve got some heavy stuff on your soul or some big things on your plate, get in your car, take a drive for 90 miles, turn around, drive home. Chances are you’re going to have some good insights. Why? Because you’re focused. You have attention.
Can you hear God when you’re playing video games or when you are on your phone checking Facebook? No, you’re distracted. You can’t have all these distractions. Remember, we are sheep.
Sheep will literally drown themselves drinking out of a stream because of the distractions of the current, stop them from their true purpose of getting water, and they end up drowning and dying. If you’re distracted, guess what? You’re a sheep, so you get distracted, drown, and die. Not good. Don’t be distracted. You got to be in a place where you can hear God’s voice.
Picture this, you can’t talk to a friend of yours in another state if you don’t call them. You live in Minnesota and your friend lives in California, “Oh, gee, I wish I could talk to so-and-so. I’ll just think. Maybe they’ll think and maybe they’ll hear me.”
No, you pick up the phone and you call them. You’re in a place where they can hear you and you can hear them on the phone, or you send an email. You use the place where you can communicate with each other, whether it’s phone, email, social media, chat, texting, whatever, you use the place.
So, how do you communicate with God? You got to use the places where you can communicate and hear God. What are the places? Prayer, Bible, church, listening, being alone in a room, meditating on the Word day and night. You got to be in His Word in the same way you must call on God. Remember Psalms? David called on God like crazy.
Let’s go to Psalms 18, Verse 6. Psalms 18, Verse 6, turn with me please, 18:6 says – this is David – “In my distress, I called on Yahweh. I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice, my cry came before Him into his ears.” He hears you. God hears you.
You are His children, the sheep of His pasture. He cares for you. “Cast all your anxiety on Him…” – 1 Peter 5:7 – “…because he cares for you.” He will hear you. He heard David. He will hear you.
Let’s go to Jeremiah 33:3 – says, “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Wow, call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things that you do not know. So, this is God talking. You call to Him, He will answer you!
He will tell great and un – what are these great and unsearchable things? Is He going to tell you where X marks the spot? Where’s Area 51? Who killed Kennedy? No! He’s going to tell you great and unsearchable things discovered in the Bible, the Word of God. He will give you wisdom if you ask for it.
James, “Anyone who asks wisdom, let him ask God who gives willingly to all.” Now, what does that mean? How can you get this from God? You got to be in His Word. There are so many words in the Bible. I don’t know the number, but it’s a lot, millions. There are books, chapters, verses, all kinds of things in the Bible. This is many, many, many, many opportunities for you to hear God. So, you need to be in His Word, somewhere where you can hear His voice.
2 Timothy 3:16 and 17 says, ‘Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, and was taken up in glory.”
The mystery of godliness is great. How can you become godly? Let’s see, that’s 1 Timothy. That’s still a good Verse, but that’s not the one. Now, everything happens for a reason. We wanted 2 Timothy, but, okay, the mystery of godliness – we’re going to use it – the mystery of godliness is great.
Can it be a mystery? What are the great and unsearchable things? Right there, the mystery of godliness. Those are some great and unsearchable things that you can find out. Everything happens for a reason. That was 1 Timothy 3:16 and 17.
I want 2 Timothy 3:16 and 17, but that Verse still served the purpose. Why? Maybe it’s speaking to one of you. I don’t know, could be. But, let’s go to the right Verse, or the proper Verse, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Okay, what does that mean? Well, all Scripture is God-breathed. If it is God-breathed, do you think that means that God is speaking? Are these God’s words? Yes, God is speaking to you through the Scripture. He will reveal to you great and unsearchable things.
Well, the mystery of godliness is great. So, guess what? Maybe godliness and how to be godly will be revealed to you if you know and understand and study the Scriptures and the Word of God. Is that a truth? Yes, it is.
For someone who doesn’t know Jesus Christ as their Savior, the mystery of godliness is great – because they don’t know how to be holy. They don’t know how to do good.
They spend all their time here on Earth working to get into Heaven – doing good deeds, good works, being a good person, taking communion, confessing their sins, going to chapel or to mass or to church, trying to do good, and then they hope that someday it’ll be good enough to get them into Heaven. And, when they die, they hope that people here on Earth will pray that they can be led into Heaven.
That is not true! The truth is the Bible, know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and that mystery of godliness is great. It will be revealed to you, great and unsearchable things. You will know how to get into Heaven. You will know for a fact that you can get into Heaven with certainty. That’s pretty great and unsearchable…pretty cool how God works.
Where can you hear God’s voice? Let’s go to Romans 10:17. Now that we just had a little side message with a couple accidental Verses, it really, really made some good sense. Romans 10:17 – I hope you heard those words, and I hope that you really understand what is going on here – 10:17 says, “Consequently faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word of Christ.”
Where are the Words of Christ? Well, the New Testament is filled with Words of Christ, and if you have a Bible that has red lettering in it, those are the Words of Christ. How cool is that? So, you can get a Bible with red letters, and it will tell you exactly when Jesus is talking, those are the Words of Christ.
Now, you say you want to hear God’s voice. Well, you may not hear an audible voice in the movies, like in the movies. You may not hear a loud, booming – “So and so” – God talking to you. You may! But, more than likely you’re hearing of God’s voice or God revealing Himself to you is going to be through Scripture. Words may just lift off the page to you and resonate with you.
For example, the wrong one that I read, that was God talking through something else. It may be someone speaking to you. It may be through a message, a video. You may hear an answer through prayer, praying on something. You may get something in a dream. God can speak to you in all kinds of ways.
It may not be an audible voice, like in the movies, more something in your heart, something inside, something that you feel and know is what you need to do. And, the way to know that is to get discernment through the Holy Spirit, and the way to get the Holy Spirit is to know and believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and to ask for the Holy Spirit to be bestowed upon you.
No, you may not have the Holy Spirit like the Disciples had it where they could just prophesy and they could cast out demons and heal people and raise the dead, but you will still have a portion of the Holy Spirit. How much you will receive really depends on what God’s purpose is in yours.
Man, I wish I had more. I want to be like the prophets in the Old Testament who – there’s a dead person, and they can raise the dead, or how the Holy Spirit comes upon them and all of a sudden they go from here to there, they’ve tucked their cloaks into their belts and run thousands of miles like crazy.
I mean what an amazing possession like Elijah and Elisha how they had the Holy Spirit, like the Disciples how they had the Holy Spirit, but it may not be my calling or your calling to have the Holy Spirit like that. Maybe your gift in the Holy Spirit is something and maybe my gift in the Holy Spirit could be teaching or preaching. Maybe yours is listening to people’s problems and giving them a shoulder to cry on. Maybe it’s hospitality. Who knows? Everyone is different.
You need to be in the Word, though, in order to hear God. While you are reading certain things will resonate with you, will stick with you, He will show you what you need to hear. He will reveal to you the right thing to do. So read God’s word – pray!
You know it’s funny that only one-fourth of Christians, whether they’re “Christians” or whether they’re true believers in Christ, read their Bible every day. It’s probably less than that because some people probably lied on the survey. Yet, pretty much every single household in America, 95, over 95 percent of households in America claim to have at least one Bible in the house. Many people have it on their phone. That’s another Bible really.
The Internet, if that, I mean that they don’t have that. Even if you have the Internet, you could look up the Bible, but that’s not really having a Bible I guess. So, the point is if over 95 percent of the households have a Bible, yet only one-fourth of the people claim to be reading it every day, that’s a problem. Yet, they all want to hear God.
Sheep – we’re sheep – can’t hear God if you don’t read the Bible, can’t hear God if you don’t pray, can’t hear God if you’re not in church, watching stuff like this, or relying on Him fully. It’s as simple as this: If you want to hear God’s voice, read God’s Word.
Let’s go to Joshua 1:8, Joshua 1:8, says, “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do everything written in it….” – Ah, wait a minute. There’s a promise – “…Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Whew, do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night.
Always be thinking about it, contemplating the Verses, thinking about the stories, what these people maybe went through, talk about it with others so that you will do what it says and then you will be prosperous and successful. Hmm, pretty cool. Yeah, I am going to do that. You better believe it. Meditate on this day and night, and I’ll be prosperous and successful. This is God’s Words, not my promise, it’s God’s promise. Does God break his promises? No.
He never wiped the Israelites out because of a promise He made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob so many years before. He’s never flooded the Earth since Noah because of a promise He made with Noah, even though so many people down here really, really upset Him, He still has us here because of a promise. He never breaks a promise. This is a promise. Do everything that’s written in here, follow it, and we’ll be prosperous and successful. Pretty good promise to me.
You want to hear God’s voice? Read the Bible, pray, follow it, do what it says. That’s it.
Let’s pray:
Lord Jesus, thank you so much for this message today. Thank you for the inspiration and the ability to deliver it. Thank you for the listeners. I ask that you would touch each and every one of them.
Help them with whatever it is they’re going through. Help them to be able to find a place to hear your voice whether it is in their car, in their house. Maybe it’s in the bathroom where they lock the door. Maybe it’s in their bedroom. Maybe they crawl into a closet – wherever it may be, Lord.
I ask that they would be willing to take the step to hear your voice, to read the Bible, to watch videos like this, to attend church, to pray, to talk to you, to talk to others, and Lord reveal that to them, help them follow you so that they can live by the promises that you have made that they will be prosperous and successful.
And, Lord Jesus, I ask that you would help Social Media Ministries fulfill its mission to share this with as many people as possible through the use of social media. Please bless each and every one of those people listening, help them to really think about this, and allow it to change lives for the purposes of Your will.
Thank you so much for revealing to us additional Scriptures that didn’t intend to be delivered and messages that I had no idea that were going to come out. I ask that whoever that’s meant for that it would hit them and that they would really, really listen to it and follow You.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Once again, I want to thank you very much for giving us your time today, this evening, or whenever you are watching. And, please consider hitting that like button, the subscribe button, and the bell icon to help support Social Media Ministries and sharing this with as many people as possible.
God bless.
