Get your Bible ready and listen to this great message about how the Bible shows that dinosaurs and humans were alive at the same time. Yes, it’s true. If you believe the Bible then you can believe that humans shared the earth with dinosaurs.
The Bible is full of stories about God creating the world and all the creatures in it. One of those creatures was the dinosaur. In fact, the Bible mentions dinosaurs specifically by name a few times. The most well-known instance is in Job 40:15-24 when God is talking to Job about how powerful He is. In these verses, God describes a creature called Behemoth, which many people believe was a hippopotamus or elephant. But there are some pretty good arguments that Behemoth was actually a dinosaur! Here are three reasons why:
1) The description of Behemoth matches up perfectly with what we know about dinosaurs from science. When you read through the description in Job, you can see that it sounds a lot like a Brachiosaurus – one of the biggest types of dinosaurs that ever lived! It had huge legs and an incredibly long neck; it ate plants; it drank massive amounts of water; and its tail “swished back and forth like a cedar tree” (Job 40:17).
2) Some Bible translations actually use the word “dinosaur” when they discuss Behemoth. For example, in Young’s Literal Translation from 1898, Genesis 1:21 says that God created “…great whales [dinosaurs], and every living creature…which creepeth on Earth.” And Psalm 74:13-14 says that God “…brakest Leviathan [a giant sea reptile] by thy strong arm,” which could easily be referring to something like Kronosaurus or Mosasaurus – two massive marine reptiles which definitely would have been considered “dinosaurs” by anyone who saw them!
3) There’s also evidence outside of Scripture itself that suggests humans and dinosaurs once lived together. One famous example is Ica Stones – over 16,000 carved stones found in Peru that show human figures interacting with all sorts of different animals… including what look suspiciously like Tyrannosaurus rex and Stegosaurus!

So far we have talked about how the Earth is young and we have also talked about how there was water in the atmosphere and that water allowed us and the animals on the Earth to live a lot longer. What does this mean? Well, we are going to continue with that series today.
This is part three, so if you haven’t seen those first two I would encourage you to check out a playlist right here in a card if you are watching, on YouTube or if you are listening somewhere else check out our YouTube channel, navigate to the playlist and watch those other two sermons because they are very good, very insightful, and they are pretty easy to watch.
Not a lot there that is too complicated. Today is part three, we are talking about “How dinosaurs walked with humans.” Now for those of you who say, “Whoa whoa, wait a minute, wait a minute dinosaurs and humans did not exist at the same time.”
The Earth is millions of years old, the dinosaurs were from millions of years ago, then they got extinct, humans came, natural processes, etc. In the number one or the first part of this series we talked about how the Earth was young, really about 6,000 years old at this point, 5,996 years, so we are four years shy of 6,000 years.
Now the Earth itself could be older than that because the story of creation talks about how the Earth was formless and void, and pretty much nothing existed. But then God created and separated the land from water and all of this, so He could have either created it there and then, nothing existed before, or the Earth was just empty and void and He created it out of that.
So either the core was here or the core wasn’t here. It is possible that if they date the earth and they say, “Oh it is this old,” it is possible. But from the point of life on Earth until now is 6,000 years if you believe in the Bible and we here do at Social Media Ministries. That is what we preach.
We preach right from the Bible and that is where we get the numbers. You can check out that first sermon in this series if you want to learn more. The water in the atmosphere was a blanket that covered the earth and then we had the first rain, which we will talk about next week so stay tuned for that, that is when that water left the atmosphere and then we were limited to our days on Earth.
People didn’t live as old. We are going to talk about that in two weeks, how we are limited with our life here on Earth, which could have hindered the dinosaurs from becoming so big. Lizards never stop growing, reptiles never stop growing. If they kept growing in an oxygen-rich environment for hundreds of years they no doubt would be very huge.
That is what we are talking about today. How the dinosaurs and the humans were here at the same time. They walked with humans. If you want to dig into it you can find fossils like a dinosaur track with people’s footprints in them, things like that.
There is plenty of evidence. They found dinosaur bones with red blood cells still alive, indicating that they couldn’t have been here millions of years ago and the fossil layer shows that most of the fossils are in one level which would be consistent with the time of the flood.
If you don’t believe in a worldwide flood, well nearly every major religion has some type of catastrophic flood documented. It is pretty common. Pretty certain that it did indeed happen. Like I said we preach from the Bible, we believe in the Bible and that is what it says here.
Let’s continue. We have a lot of verses today. We are going to dive deep into what the Scripture has to say about dinosaurs. I hope that you are focused and in tune. Hopefully, you have got your Bibles.
I will try to move a little quickly so I don’t expect you to turn to all of these and keep up, but I will put them in the description below so you can come back later and dive into them and read them and examine them and get the context, read a couple of verses before and after.
This is a message that I encourage you to get with some other people, talk to somebody, get a group of you guys together, look up these passages, and talk about it. Dive into this because this is a unique situation in that it is not simply a scripture reference or a Bible teaching on a topic.
Don’t get me wrong they are important, but this is something that is history. It is like if you visit Israel and you see everything that you are reading. It is a cool part, you can learn about dinosaurs, you know about dinosaurs in school history, the geology, all of this stuff you have learned about this and now you can see it in the Bible as well.
It is kind of a cool correlation and correspondence. So dive into it and I hope you get excited about it like I do. Let’s start. We are going to go to Genesis 1:24. “Then God said let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind, cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind.”
God made all these animals when He created the world, He made all of them, and He then created Adam. We talked about two creation stories, Genesis 1 and Genesis 2, which was a sermon series we did. If you haven’t seen that, feel free to check it out, I will try to put a card up here for you, otherwise, it is on the YouTube channel. You can view it in the playlist.
So He created Adam and gave Adam the task of naming all of the animals, that is Genesis 2:19. “Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them and whatever the man called each living creature that was its name.”
The man gave names to all the livestock, the birds, and the beasts of the field. The man or Adam in the original text is what it is translated as, that is why it says the man because, in the original language, Adam meant man. The man they translated.
Very well, the man named all of these animals so he would have named all the dinosaurs. That is where we get all these names, modern science may think that we named them but it is whatever name that we call the dinosaur, “The t-rex or tyrannosaurus rex” is a name derived from Adam.
All right, continuing, all the beasts of the field. This means that God created them all, they weren’t here before, God created them all, the animals, dinosaurs included. Let’s dive into a little bit more about what that is why and how. There is a Greek word “Dragon,” which appears 28 times throughout the Bible and it is usually translated as dragon.
Remember we talked about a few different dinosaurs last week. I mentioned three and so now we are going to dive into them specifically, “Dragon,” “Leviathan,” and “Behemoth.” And we are going to find them in the Bible here and look at them.
Bear with me, this could be a little long but I am going to try to move quickly so that everybody can go about their day and think about this. “Behemoth” is mentioned and described in Job. It eats grass, it is tall like a cedar, with bones like bronze, and ribs like iron, and it is just a massive thing, a very large animal.
We are gonna look into that one. Another dinosaur is the “Leviathan” which is described in several places, including Job, Psalms, and Isaiah. Leviathan has teeth like crazy, rows of scales, breathes fire, no sword can pierce him, he regards iron as straw and bronze as rotten wood. What type of creature could this be?
We are going to dive into it a little more and then I have got a cool little comparison for you that I want to draw so that you can kind of see what this Leviathan might have been. It is really kind of scary to me to think about and it kind of has changed my perspective and everything a little bit even though I know that it shouldn’t because it is not there anymore.
Let’s dive into this. We are going to start with the Behemoth. God described a Behemoth in Job 40:15-24. I am going to read that for you. “Look at the behemoth which I made along with you.
He eats grass like an ox, look at all the strength of his loins and the power and the muscles in his belly. He stiffens his tail like a cedar tree, his tendons of thighs are woven firmly together, his bones are like bronze tubes and his limbs are like iron rods. He is the foremost of God’s works. Only his maker can draw the sword against him.”
This is a huge creature, a big creature that God created and no one else can take it. We are going to keep going. We are going to keep going to a different translation here. Listen to this. “Tail like cedar, his thighs are close in it, bones are like bronzy ranks.”
This is Verse 20, now we are gonna go a little longer. “The hills bring him their produce and all the wild animals play nearby under the lotus plants. He lies hidden among the reeds and the marsh. The lotuses conceal him in their shadow. The poplars by the stream surround him. Whenever the river rages he is not alarmed. He is secure though the Jordan should surge against his mouth. Can anyone capture him by the eyes or trap him and pierce his nose?”
This is a huge creature, really large, this is the behemoth. What could this be? Well, some people think that it could be an older animal like a hippopotamus or an elephant or maybe even a wooly mammoth-type of a creature. But we know that can’t be what it is. Why?
Also, we know that it was there, God tells Job to look at the behemoth which means that in the Book of Job, the animal was right there for Job to look at when God was speaking to him. Like look at that behemoth right there and Job’s like, “Yeah man, holy moly, hope that thing doesn’t squash me or something like that.”
It was too large to be captured and had no fear of the Jordan River. Now if you have ever been over the Jordan River you will see it is huge, that thing would flood. No, you would not be there if the behemoth was standing there and the Jordan flooded and he doesn’t care. This is a huge creature.
Gentle giants feeding on the vegetation, lotus trees, and animals running around under there. He was considered first or chief in the works of God, so he was a big majestic creature. A cedar tree, cedar trees are huge. This guy is a big dinosaur.
What could it be? Well, it is most likely a type of sauropod, perhaps even the brachiosaurus, the long neck that would feed on the leaves up above. That his legs were huge. The belly was big, you couldn’t pierce it. This is the largest of dinosaurs.
They prefer wet habitats, their footprints are often found in fossils of riverbeds, and lagoons, and intertwined with fossils of marine organisms. They walk on all four legs but sometimes they could rear up on their hind legs. They were big creatures all right. The brachiosaurus had a center of mass in the hip area which is what we believe could be the behemoth.
Extremely long tail which he would have been able to snap like a whip and move quickly which is kind of like a big trunk of a cedar tree that would just bulldoze anything that it hit. Big creature and it was there. It was there with Job.
All right, another dinosaur. Let’s continue. We are gonna go to Dragons. It is huge. All right Ezekiel 32:1-2. We are gonna go there, bear with me, Verses one and two, I got so many markers today, so many Bible verses because they are all over the place in the Bible.
Ezekiel 32:1-2, “On the first day of the 12th month in the 12th year, the word of the LORD came to me saying, ‘Son of Man take up a lament concerning Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him you are like a lion among the nations. You are like a monster in the seas, thrashing about in your streams, churning the water with your feet, and muddying the streams.’”
This translation says “Monster.” Let’s go to the other one though, “Compared yourself to a young lion among the nations. Yet you are like the big dragon in the seas, you go through the rivers troubling the water with your feet and making the rivers muddy.”
Now if you have footnotes and your Bible says monster you will notice that it was translated from dragon. In those footnotes, it can tell you that so look, take a look at that.
Let’s go to another one. Ezekiel 29:2-3, “Son of Man set thy face against Pharaoh king of Egypt and prophesy against him and all Egypt. Speak and say, thus saith the LORD, behold I am against the pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth amid his rivers, which hath said my river is mine own and I have made it for myself.”
This is a big creature, a big dragon that is in the midst of the rivers. Well, where was Pharaoh? Egypt. What river is there? The Nile. This is a big creature that would have been slithering or swimming or whatever, walking through the Nile River, living in the Nile.
This is why they believe the Nile had such great power because it had these big creatures and you had to be very careful. Now could this have been a crocodile or an alligator? Well maybe, that is what some people might think. But it is more than that, it is not simply a crocodile or an alligator. Why? Well, let’s keep going.
Let’s go to Isaiah 51:8-9. “For the moth will devour them as it devours clothing. The worm will eat at them as it eats wool, but my righteousness will last forever, my salvation will continue from generation to generation. Wake up, wake up oh LORD. Clothe yourself with strength, flex your mighty right arm, and arouse yourself as in the days of old when you slew in Egypt the dragon of the Nile.”
Now okay maybe they are saying that Egypt was the dragon of the Nile and it is a comparison there pretty much, but they compared it to a dragon of the Nile. That means there could have, I mean due to reasoning here we are saying if they compare it to the dragon and the Nile there is probably a dragon in the Nile to compare Egypt with. Fierce creature, not a good one. What could it have been? Well, these creatures most likely breathe fire.
One thing I want to mention about dragons is if you don’t believe that they exist or that they existed we have so many references to dragons in popular literature today, castle times, fairy tale stories, people slayed dragons, they were dragon hunters, they went out there and then they had their shield to protect from the fire and they slew the dragon and they were the heroes.
So dragons must have still existed with humans and whether they were creatures with wings and they walked and they breathed fire or whether they had no wings or didn’t, I am sure there were several different types, but the point is there are so many references to dragons even in today’s culture.
Today we don’t see them but we have little dragons like the Komodo dragon and all of these creatures that walk around or the lizards and none of them that we know breathe fire, but they could have in the past and if they grew in hyperoxygen chamber for 500 years they no doubt would be very large, so keep that in mind as well.
Let’s move on to the Leviathan. This is probably my favorite creature. God devoted an entire Chapter to Job. We are going to go there, I am not going to read you the whole chapter, it is Chapter 41. What I am going to do, bear with me here, I am going to turn there and just kind of summarize it for you.
He is described. I encourage you to read Job Chapter 41, but it is a water-dwelling creature called the leviathan. Like the behemoth, it is unable to be captured, but the leviathan is not a gentle giant like the behemoth. This guy is fierce. He is, oh my gosh, impenetrable. Impenetrable to spears and harpoons because of so many layers of scales.
This means that people tried to hunt him. People tried to kill him with spears, and harpoons because this guy was fierce. He was wreaking havoc, he had fearsome teeth, rows and rows of teeth. We read about the Leviathan a little bit, he had rows of teeth.
If you came through him, anyone who fought with this thing would remember if they lived. These are dragon-like characteristics. It was similar to a dragon. He breathed smoke and fire from his nostrils, his breath set coals ablaze. When he rose the mighty were terrified. He could be controlled by no one but God.
We are going to go to Psalm 74 to read a little bit more about them. Let’s go there. Psalm 74:13-14, “It was you who split open the sea by your power, you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. It was you who crushed the dragon, it was you who crushed the heads of the leviathan and gave him as food to the creatures of the desert.”
This is talking about God. This is David writing about God. God broke the heads of the sea monsters, crushed the heads of Leviathan, and gave him food to creatures of the wilderness. Psalm 104, let’s go there. I like this one. It is 104:26 and says, “The ships there, the ships go to and fro and the leviathan which you formed frolic there.”
So Leviathan is in deep enough waters where the ships are. Fearsome, fearsome creatures. Let’s continue. I want to show you Job Chapter 41. We are not going to read the whole thing but I want to read you verses 1 through 11 just because I feel like it. It is so cool that we need to check it out, so let’s go to Job 41:1-11. We are gonna read 1 through 11.
I know we are gonna run a little long. “Can you pull in the leviathan with a fish hook? Or tie down its tongue with a rope?” Its tongue was so big. “Can you put a cord through its nose? Or pierce its jaw with a hook? Will he keep begging you for mercy? Will he speak to you with gentle words?”
“Will he agree with you for you to take him in as your slave for life? Can you make a pet of him like a bird or put him on a leash for your girls? Will traders barter for him? Will they divide him up among the merchants? Can you fill his hide with harpoons or his head with fishing spears?”
“If you lay a hand on him you will remember the struggle and never do it again. Any hope of subduing him is false. The mere sight of him is overpowering. No one is fierce enough to rouse him. Who then can stand against me? Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.”
God keeps going about the leviathan on how great he is and then saying, “No matter how big and how fearsome that creature is, I am more powerful.” Not me but God, God is saying this and so it is cool.
We are going to jump to this part, Verse 18, “His snorting throws out flashes of light. His eyes are like the ray of dawn. Firebrand streams from his mouth and sparks of fire shoot out. Smoke pours from his nostrils as from a boiling pot over a fire of reeds.”
This creature is incredible, very incredible. What is the Leviathan? Very incredible creature. What could it be? Well, people say it could be the crocodile, could be an alligator but today crocodiles and alligators are hunted. You can shoot them. All the time on TV with the 22 rifle. They are not invincible. This leviathan would have been invincible.
All right the word leviathan in Hebrew means “Dragon” or “Serpent” or “Sea monster.” Huge, it is similar to the Hebrew word for wreath. Carrying the idea that something is twisted or coiled together. The leviathan was probably twisted and coiled together, most likely a dinosaur.
Which one? Well, the Coronosaurus, a sea-fearing dinosaur looked like an enormous crocodile with flippers, no feet. They were like 36 feet long, probably longer than your house. Fearsome, teeth all the way around, maybe two rows of them like sharks, but these teeth were huge. A shark tooth is like this. These teeth were like 12 inches long.
Can you imagine one of those things coming to you? You are done. You will never do it again. Why? Because you are dead. You will never do it again. Four or five pairs of other teeth. Fossilized stomach shows they ate turtles and other dinosaurs. These guys would have been very fearsome.
Leviathan is also mentioned in Isaiah 27:1. I showed you that about enslaving it, we can read it again. “Leviathan is a gliding serpent, the coiling serpent. He will slay the monster of the sea. Leviathan slays everything else in the sea.”
The other candidate could be another dinosaur called Elasmosaurus. This guy was 36 feet long, in addition to a long neck measuring 23 more feet. This guy was more like the loch-ness monster. He had paddle-like feet and, a short tail and it was pretty much the “Loch Ness monster-looking type of a thing.”
Big body with a long neck. This guy was huge, probably not as fearsome as the Coronosaurus. The Leviathan could have been either one of those or something like it. We don’t know for sure. But very huge. I mean that dinosaur alone is very big.
We are going to check out some more verses right now. I am going to burn through them real quick. Isaiah 27:1, “In that day the LORD with his hard heart and great and strong sword will punish the leviathan, the fleeing serpent, the leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.”
Psalm 104:24-26, “How many are your works LORD in wisdom? You made them. All the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious teeming with creatures beyond number. Living things both large and small there. The ships go to and fro and the leviathan which you formed to frolic there.”
Psalm 74:12-15, we are going to recap this one. “God my king, from ancient times, performing saving acts on the earth. You divided the sea with your strength. You smashed the heads of the sea monsters in the waters. You crushed the heads of the leviathan. You fed him to the creatures in the desert. You opened up the springs and streams and dried up the ever-flowing rivers.”
Job 3:8, “May those who curse days, curse the day. Those who are ready to rouse the leviathan.” May they curse the day that they roused the Leviathan because that is how bad that thing was. Job 41:18-19, “When the leviathan sneezes it gives out a flash of light, its eyes are like the first ray of dawn, flames blaze from its mouth and sparks fly out.”
Verse 22, “The tremendous strength in the leviathan’s neck strikes terror wherever it goes.” This is why we think it could maybe have been the Loch Ness monster with that long neck, don’t know for sure.
Job 41:31, “Leviathan makes the water boil with its commotion.” Underwater as it is going it could be breathing fire in anger and the water starts boiling, it stirs up the depths like a pot of ointment. This guy was not to be trifled with. Huge huge dinosaur.
All right, what is the point of all this? Well, it is just to show you how awesome these creatures were and they were here with humans. We have it all over in the Bible. Check them out. All these verses will be referenced below. It is going to be a long list, read them, look into them, they are huge.
Now I told you, in the beginning, there was a little picture that I had in mind that really kind of freaked me out. I mean I know that this Coronosaurus creature, leviathan, if it does exist still today if it has survived, obviously it could have survived the flood, same with the Loch Ness monster.
One of those creatures was here after the flood. People say they have seen this Loch Ness monster, they are not just making it up so it is probably there or a water horse probably survived the flood and that is where it ended up when the earth dried up.
The Coronosaurus which I believe is more like the leviathan could still be out there in the ocean somewhere just down deep, maybe it is not coming up in the light anymore for some reason, I don’t know, thankfully.
But there is a movie called “Jurassic World” and there are several of them, obviously all the Jurassic Park movies as well but in the Jurassic World movie I think they made some fearsome creatures that could be scary if you let them. If you think about how incredible these creatures would have been.
In one particular scene, it is at the end of the movie when the dinosaurs are off the island, you have got people surfing in the ocean and all of a sudden you see in the wave of the tube this big creature and it is just coming up and he is gonna gobble up all those surfers.
You are looking at that like, “Holy moly, do I ever dare go in the ocean again?” It gives me goosebumps, but if you haven’t seen that scene look it up because it is definitely kind of freaky. Every time I have been to the ocean since I have seen that it is a little weird to me, it trips me out a little bit.
The bottom line is dinosaurs were here with humans. They walked with humans, humans feared them, and humans hunted them and attacked them. We tried to fight them off. We are gonna talk about the first rain next week and how that could have affected the life of the dinosaurs.
In addition, two weeks from now we are going to talk about how we are limited to 120 years some reasons why, and also what that could have done to the dinosaurs. So please stay tuned for more because we have got a lot more coming up. Thank you so much for tuning in today on this history lesson from the Bible.
Let’s pray. Lord, thank you so much for this great time together, and for all of the awesomeness that you created in these creatures. For the incredible, we can’t even imagine how great they were, and how powerful they were and would have been.
Thank you for the illustrations you gave us in the Bible, that no matter how powerful they are or they were, you are even more powerful and you are on our side. We have you with us and thank you so much for giving us that opportunity to have that personal relationship with you through your son Jesus Christ.
Thank you for that and thank you so much for every person out there today watching and listening. I ask that this would have been very interesting for them, that they would continue to turn the gears in their head and follow more and look into it more and be inspired to share this with other people and to use this as a great way to introduce the Bible to others and then pull them into salvation and a relationship with your son Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Thanks so much for tuning in today. If you have not made that decision to begin a relationship with Jesus and have Him be your Lord and Savior, I encourage you to look into that. Comment below, and send us a message, we would love to help you out.
It is very simple. He is knocking on your door, all you need to do is invite Him in and ask Him to take charge of your life. If you need help with that or you want any guidance or comment, we would love to do that with you. Thanks again so much for tuning in this week. God bless.
